A young man, in his best bow-tie and boater, meets a fashionably dressed - and rather bird-like - young lady. But when he takes her home she undergoes a transformation and our hero's dreams of connubial bliss suddenly turn into the stuff of nightmares.
Totally wordless, "Bye Bye Birdie" showcases Shirley Hughes' brilliant drawing and her extraordinarily vivid imagination. Plastic surgery, a different wardrobe, a smouldering look, have given her confidence and a new and thrilling power to attract, which she uses recklessly. Often just for the fun of it. People are drawn to Tamara Drewe, male and female.
In the remote village where her late mother lived Tamara arrives to clear up the house. Here she becomes an object of lust, of envy, the focus of unrequited love, a seductress. To the village teenagers she is 'plastic-fantastic', a role model. Ultimately, when her hot and indiscriminate glances lead to tragedy, she is seen as a man-eater, a heartless marriage wrecker, a slut. First appearing as a serial in the "Guardian", in book form, "Tamara Drewe" has been enlarged, embellished and lovingly improved by the author. This book introduces us to the bountiful tree-lined garden of Adam and Eve, the massive ark of Noah with beasts of every kind, the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah destroyed by brimstone and fire that rained from the heavens, and the Egypt of the Pharaoh, where Joseph's embalmed body is carried in a coffin.
All three are rivals for the love of Paris, the lighthouse-keeper's son. When Paris chooses Bettine, and she becomes pregnant, the other sisters are jealous. Eventually, afte r the baby is born, they cause Bettine's death. Paris runs away to sea and Ophile, overwhelmed by remorse, throws herself from the lighthouse.

This book contains two short adult in nature graphic stories. I found both stories interesting, but very bleak. Oct 18, Gretel rated it liked it Shelves: comics-or-graphic-novels. Pentti and Deathgirl is an intriguing book. Emma Rendel's style is like Tove Jansson on steroids; it is very unique and interesting to look at. I found Pentti to be a much stronger comic than Deathgirl. Pentti is about two Finnish brothers who live in the woods and have new presumed homosexual neighbours.
Pentti has an issue with this. I found it to be funny yet dark.

Deathgirl is pretty average and would appeal to edgy scene kids. I was little disappointed by it. Jan 18, Nuno rated it really liked it. The book gather two stories from Emma Rendel.

Both with a different narrative. The art is wonderful, weird, but beautiful at the same time.
Women’s Contemporary Fiction
I really liked both stories, I just wish they were longer pieces. Really worth a look, for everyone with a leaning to artsy books, weird stories, or anything "alternative". Aug 03, Frank rated it it was amazing. An amazingly intricate, beautiful and borderline obsessive drawing style that begs comparison to Tove Jansson's Moomin series. It reminds me that comics are about the interplay between text and image. As much about reading the imagery as the dialogue.
